Background
Kemp Carpenters was approached by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) to undertake a significant refurbishment project at Nuriootpa High School. The Home Economics Kitchen was upgraded with comprehensive enhancements, including kitchen joinery, flooring, ceilings, switchboards, lighting, and plumbing systems. External refurbishments involved installing a new septic tank and re-bituminising an outdoor area.
A tight timeframe
The project faced several challenges. Firstly, the scheduled work was required to take place while no students were on site over the Christmas period, reducing the window for contractor availability, coordination and execution. Additionally, there were lengthy lead times to coordinate for critical items such as joinery, risking delays in overall project delivery. Ensuring compliance with safety standards, which is always a priority, was particularly necessary with the removal of existing asbestos flooring.

Success Essentials: Experienced planning and teamwork
Kemp Carpenters employed meticulous planning to navigate these challenges and fostered strong, cooperative relationships with stakeholders. We began by coordinating with suppliers and subcontractors well in advance of the Christmas break, ensuring that all necessary materials and labour were secured for a seamless project rollout. Applying our project management experience to take proactive measures helped reduce potential delays and enable smooth progress.
Kemp Carpenters' reputation for being approachable and easy to work with proved invaluable. We engaged reliable subcontractors who shared a commitment to meet the deadlines. Close collaboration and transparent communication allowed adjustments to be made promptly, ensuring that the project timeline remained on track.
Health and safety were top priorities. Kemp Carpenters employed specialised teams for the removal of asbestos, adhering strictly to regulatory standards. Careful coordination ensured that all safety measures were followed, creating safe working conditions and maintaining an uncontaminated environment for the school.
